In a Democratic Society
Professional Organizations
Below are a couple professional organizations I am apart of related to mathematics and education. Feel free to peruse their sites!
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
Every year, I pay a membership towards the National Council of Teaching Mathematics (NCTM). NCTM is a professional national organization which allows me to gain resources, and tools of mathematics education, like journals, professional development, and national and regional conferences. I subscribed for the Mathematics Teaching journals this year, since I’m teaching assisting in high school. I read the journal every month. I find the suggestions and articles very interesting and I plan to incorporate them into my lesson planning. This organization allows me to connect to other math educators for networking and share ideas for lessons, projects, and assessments. NCTM allows me to learn what is best to teach my students and how to be a leader in the classroom as an educator. I plan on attending some of the regional and national conferences in the next year in order to form connections with other math educators across the world. NCTM allows me to gain insights from other colleagues for math education and gain external resources outside of the classroom in order to guide interactions between students and other teachers in education.

Delta Upsilon International Fraternity- Grand Valley State Chapter
As a brother of Delta Upsilon, I have gained leadership, academic, and professional skills which I believe will help me apply to my role in education. I have learned how to speak publically and have worked with various people. Throughout my leadership positions, I learned how to collaborate and work with a diverse group of people. Over the past few years, I have become knowledgeable on how to plan and setup various events, for instance, philanthropies, and scholarship completions. I have worked with many individuals from different cultures, which allowed me to understand their perspective. As I formed personal relationships with my colleagues and began to network with others, we formed a great professional team. I have talked with other teachers from my chapter as well as other chapters during Delta Upsilon programs, especially during the Regional Leadership Seminar. The brothers gave me insight about the education system, their stories on why they wanted to go into education and they even provided as a resource for future possible lessons. This gave me an opportunity to get feedback from others and a new perspective of how students learn in the classroom. Delta Upsilon gave me opportunities to learn how to become an active member in the democratic society and helped prepare me for the professional career in education. The promotion of our four founding principles: The Promotion of Friendship, The Development of Character, The Diffusion of Liberal Culture, and The Advancement of Justice, allowed me to become liberal educator by being a well-round individual who has good character, intercultural competence and providing justice with one another.
